This Sunday we begin our new preaching and study series, “Taking on the Character of Christ”.  We’ll be using Richard Peace’s newly released book, “Spiritual Transformation,” and we are excited about it for a number of reasons!

“Spiritual Transformation” is an in-depth look at Romans 12 & 13, and uses these biblical passages to examine two main themes: The dynamics of spiritual transformation, and the goal of spiritual transformation. The built-in Study Guide and Small Group questions make this an excellent resource for biblical study and personal spiritual formation.  We believe reading this new book alongside our study of the Bible will be a meaningful experience of becoming shaped more into the likeness of Christ.

Richard Peace has been a good friend of La Canada Presbyterian Church, and we’ve used a number of his books in Small Group or Bible Study settings, including the church-wide study we did with “Holy Conversation: Talking About God in Everyday Life.”  Reading this book together started some important conversations about what it means to be a missional people, and how to talk about being a follower of Jesus in natural, everyday language.   Richard was most recently the Professor of Evangelism and Spiritual Formation at Fuller Theological Seminary; his heart for evangelism and spiritual formation, and his work with small groups, makes this a well-timed resource for us.

Finally, if you are not in a Small Group and would like to be in one, we have a brand new Wednesday evening Bible Study and Small Group series beginning on Wednesday, January 18th!  The new Wednesday series is open to all men and women.  We’ll meet from 6:30 – 8:30 PM, and begin the evening enjoying snacks and fellowship, gather together as a large group to cover the Bible Study portion and then break into Small Groups to share the discussion and question sections found in the Study Guide.  The Bible Study portion will be led on alternating weeks by Gareth Icenogle, Chuck Osburn or Shelley Irvine, and the Small Groups will remain the same for the 12 weeks we meet together.  Childcare will be available by reservation.

Whether you are already in a Small Group or you are interested in joining a Small Group, stop by the book sales table in the Narthex this Sunday to get your copy for $15 (a very discounted price).  You can also sign up for the Wednesday evening Bible Study and Small Group series, or call the office and leave your information with Barbara Pettit, ext 215.   You’ll be contacted before January 18 to give you more details!
