THIS WEEK, we’ll be moving from the “WHO” question to the “WHERE” question.  WHERE is God asking you to invest your time?  If we are to take the mission statement of this church seriously – to be Christ’s people in this world – it means that our very purpose is to leave the comfort of our church building and to go out into the world and see what God is up to there.  But how do we decide where to go?  Acts 15 and 16 will offer us some guidance about how God leads us to decide where to invest our time in order to engage those outside the church.

AFTERPARTY:  At this week’s AfterParty, we’ll get to practice what it means to engage outside the church at our Summer Concert Series in Memorial Park 6-8pm  (1301 Foothill in La Canada).  It’s a great chance to invite your friends who might not come to church, and to hang out with our local community.  Bring your friends, a blanket or chair, and some dinner or snacks.  Our goal is just to be good neighbors, make new friends, and see what God does.  Alisha Sandalow is this week’s LCPC CONCERT HOST.  She will save a spot with blankets and mark it with two orange lawn flags.  Look for an orange lawn flag at a spot close to La Canada Blvd (east side of the park) about 30 yards away from the stage.  If you can’t find us, call Alisha, cell 509.898.5392.

AFTERPARTY Concert Hosts Needed: Each week we want a different person or family to host the concert for us.  You would show up before The 5:05, leave a blanket and lawn flag to mark our spot, then show up at the 5:05 and tell us where to meet!  Let me know if you can host the next few weeks: June 23, June 30, July 7, 6-8pm.

SUMMER KID’ S PROGRAM:  Lastly, we wanted to remind you, or let you know if you were not there last week, about the changes to our kids program at the 5:05.  For the summer, we are experimenting with having the older kids, those entering 4th grade and above stay with their families in the service.  Children in nursery through 3rd grade will have a new program led by our Director of Early Childhood Education, Heather Henry.  Children infant through those entering kindergarten can be dropped off before you go to the 5:05 service.  Children entering 1st-3rd grade will go to worship with their parents and then be dismissed to the new kid’s program.  ALL children will then be picked up in their respective rooms in the Children’s Pavilion.

On May 19, La Canada Presbyterian Church organized its first Serve Day, uniting hundreds of people to serve in eight hands-on service projects across LA County, as far as downtown LA and as close as right here in La Canada.

• 236 people served in 8 hands-on service projects across LA County
• An additional 150+ people donated food and goods at LCPC, Vons, or online.
• Service projects included lunch and dinner for homeless (Union Rescue Mission and Union Station), game night/dinner for vulnerable children (Child S.H.A.R.E. and Door of Hope), community gardening (Harambee), a baby shower (Elizabeth House), and collecting food and goods for people in need (LA Food Bank and LCPC’s Virtual Food & Goods Drive).
• All projects were multi-generational with ages ranging from 3-year-olds helping their parents to people in their 80’s.
• In addition to LCPC members and friends, over 40 families from the community joined in to help. 

“It was a joy to see so many different people united to make a real difference in our community,” said Megan Katerjian, Director of Outreach.  “Our faith compels us to demonstrate our love for God by showing compassion for our neighbors, especially those in need.  Serve Day was a great way to put our faith into action.”

The next Serve Day 2014 is already scheduled for May 4, 2014.

This is the story of a rich, indulged kid from the OC who happens upon a trip to India with friends. Once there, he is confronted by the reality of human trafficking, and how he can make even the smallest difference.

The producer, Brent Martz, has been painfully working on this project for four years — and is hopeful that this exposure will inspire others to help free powerless victims (many of them children) from the horrors of human trafficking.
