Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? –Isaiah 43.19

The Gospel is about beginning. God is the one who stands at the beginning of Creation (Gen 1), the “beginning before the beginning” (“In the beginning was the Word . . .”—John 1), and the beginning that will occur when Jesus returns and makes all things new (Rev. 21). The call to discipleship is the word “begin,” and the call to repentance, new every morning, is the same word. There are many other beginnings in the Bible, including the covenants, the coming into the Promise Land, the return from exile, Jesus’ birth, the calling of the disciples, the resurrection, Pentecost, etc. Beginnings carry grace, and promise, and excitement. There is also the idea that, as Christians, we are always “beginners,” constantly failing, and trying again, and all of this sustained by the grace of God. God begins with us, and then begins again, and again. We are God’s new creations. God is beginning a new thing at LCPC, too. It is the church’s task to attend to this, to perceive what new thing God is doing, and to join in this work.
