November 6, 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
The Jack Lantz Sextet will broadcast a Jazz Vespers from the La Cañada Presbyterian Church on Friday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. In these racially charged times, the theme will be the life and lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – his nonviolent protests and his lessons of racial harmony. The simple liturgy will be based on his teachings. And Jack’s commentary will describe key events of King’s life, their music and their impact on America in the 1960s.
In 1964 Dr. Martin Luther King was invited to present a speech at the 1964 Berlin Jazz Festival describing the importance of jazz, both to him and to the world. Thus, the music of this Jazz Vespers includes hymns, spirituals and gospel songs that were favorites of Martin Luther King, all played in a jazz style that he would appreciate.
The November 6 Jazz Vespers program will feature the Jack Lantz Sextet (Jack on piano, Dennis Mitcheltree on alto and tenor saxophones, Jeff Kaye, trumpet and Ido Meshulam trombone, plus Nick Morabito, bass and Dave Marks, drums). The group will improvise on a wide range of familiar hymns, spirituals and gospel music. According to Jack Lantz “This music was not only special to Martin Luther King, but continues to speak to us today.”
